陶肖明,香港理工大学纺织科技讲座教授、智能可穿戴系统研究院院长。1982年于中国华东纺织工学院(现东华大学)获纺织工程学士学位。经教育部选派留学,1987年在澳大利亚新南威尔士大学获纺织物理博士学位。主要研究智能纺织材料及其光电子器件和系统、先进纺织制造技术。发表900多篇学术论文和7部学术专著。获得47项发明专利,其中十余项被多国厂家以特许授权方式采用。获得中国工程院光华工程科技奖、美国纤维学会奠基者奖和国际纺织学会荣誉会士奖。曾担任国际纺织学会世界会长。

——记香港理工大学智能可穿戴系统研究院院长陶肖明

20世纪90年代是香港制衣业的繁荣期,在港风穿搭风靡中国时,陶肖明从澳大利亚归来,定居在这座中西交汇的时尚都市。学纺织工程出身的她到此的第一个课题便是将光纤与纺织复合材料相结合,立时走在了前沿尖端。此时,世界上还没几个人涉及这项工作。几年后,她出版开拓性专著《智能纤维织物及服装》和《穿着式电子及光子器件及系统》,纤纤素手“飞针穿线”,将传统纺织行业与高科技、高附加值结合,令其焕发勃勃生机,一个崭新的纺织研究领域呈现在世人眼前。
2021年,在智能纺织发展20余年的节点上,香港理工大学(以下简称“理大”)本着“开物成务”精神,应“市”而动,建立智能可穿戴系统研究院。作为院长,陶肖明将从前林林总总的材料、器件、技术和理论成果整合,并在此基础上高屋建瓴,从跨学科的系统研究出发,致力于打造人-机-环境交互的理想平台,踏上新的智能纺织研究征程。如今,在来自物理、化学、材料、纺织与服装、设计、电子、机械工程、康复医疗等不同学科超过200人团队的共同努力下,已形成智能可穿戴系统及其应用、智能可穿戴系统集成与评估、柔性功能材料和柔性器件三大研究方向,相关技术和产品可广泛应用于个人防护、临床医疗、公共卫生等领域。
在陶肖明看来,作为一项新兴的颠覆性技术,智能可穿戴技术将为传统服装和电子产业等带来巨大影响。年过花甲,她怀揣迭代新产业、培养新人才的使命再出发,这位从淮左名都走向世界的女子,依旧勇敢如昔,从容淡雅。
“从0到1”,把创新思维和能力融入血液
回顾科研生涯,执着的精神在陶肖明的身上体现得淋漓尽致。但她总是自谦地表示:“我很幸运,有机会一直在喜爱的领域里工作。能亲眼看到这个领域成长壮大、被越来越多人重视,对世界发展有影响,是我的荣幸。因此,我不曾改换方向,全力投入其中。”
1977年,作为中国内地恢复高考后的第一批考生,陶肖明学习的是与国计民生息息相关的纺织工程专业。当她在中国华东纺织工学院(现东华大学)勤奋求学时,我国纺织工业也正以一日千里的速度飞快发展。从1978年到1982年,短短4年,我国纤维加工总量从276万吨增至400万吨。在这个对纺织工业生产力有巨大需求的时期,大学里的纺织工程专业自然也偏向机械工程应用,这为陶肖明打下了扎实的机械工程底子。
本科毕业后,陶肖明获得公派留学资格,远赴澳大利亚。在新南威尔士大学纤维科学与技术学系,她接触到了另一个研究方向——纺织物理学。物理学的训练培养了陶肖明“从第一科学原理出发”的思维方法和跨学科研究模式。1987年获得博士学位后,陶肖明辗转于澳大利亚联邦科学工业研究组织的羊毛技术研究所、中国纺织大学、美国德雷塞尔大学纤维材料研究中心等地开展工作,在了解了国内外的纺织工业整体情况,经历了中西方双重文化的熏染后,她定居香港,执教理大。
彼时,随着产业转移,国际一流高校的纺织学科纷纷退出。纺织作为一个逐渐没落的行业,能吸引到的优秀人才正大幅减少。目睹此境,陶肖明展开积极的尝试和探索。为振兴传统纺织行业,她承担了多个重要项目,取得多项发明专利,并将十余项发明技术专利授权给世界各地的公司用于工业生产。其中,历时十余年研发成功的扭妥纱纺纱技术在全世界12个纱线生产企业使用,2005年到2013年,产出超过价值105亿港元的新型纺织品和服装。使用此技术生产的织物不仅性能优良,且生产过程无废水、废气和化学试剂排放,真正做到了高效、节能、环保。
另外,丰富的科研经历也让陶肖明意识到,纺织科研不可仅局限于解决工业现存的问题,而必须具有“从0到1”的创新思维和创新能力,具备优良的科学分析基础,创造和引领学科前沿。因此,基于在复合材料领域的深厚积淀,她跟香港科技大学余同希教授共同提出多细胞纺织复合材料的概念,对设计的多款多细胞复合材料进行研究,提出了冲击塑性变形的力学模型。此外,面对备受关注的、通信容量和中继距离成倍增长的光纤,她大胆地将之与纺织复合材料结合,展开智能光纤织物研究。由此,在勇敢创新的精神指引下,她踏入了尚处萌芽阶段的智能纺织领域。之后,她设计、制作、分析了内置纤维布拉格光栅传感器的多胞状机织复合材料;首次提出了光子纤维和纺织面料的概念;首创“可调色纳米发光布”;首次实现可洗纳米涂层织物电子传感器的研发和工业化生产;在世界范围内,促成了智能纺织的大力发展。
作为智能纺织的开拓者和领军人物,陶肖明最大的贡献就在于,将纺织这样一个传统行业与欣欣向荣的高科技、高附加值结合,将基础工业研究与各种尖端科技融会,在智能纺织领域达到了新高度、新成就,领导行业进入了新的发展里程。如今在美国哈佛大学、美国麻省理工学院、英国剑桥大学等世界一流高校中,智能纺织的研究遍地开花。亲历这一领域从寥寥几人到拥有上万研究者,引来大量优秀年轻人加入,从冷门变为热门,让年过花甲的陶肖明体会到“待到山花烂漫时,她在丛中笑”的无限欣慰。
助力“碳中和”,致力能量转换器研究
全世界的智能可穿戴系统研究历史都不算长。在智能手机出现以前,可穿戴设备在影音娱乐领域经历了几十年的初步摸索,随着智能手机的出现,才逐步明晰了自身定位和发展路径。今天,放眼市面,爆火的智能可穿戴产品大概就是智能手表、手环、耳机、眼镜四大品类了,而在这些产品中尤为突出的功能便是健康监测,以及指向运动医疗的应用。市场的趋向刚好契合了陶肖明的想法,她研究智能可穿戴系统的最终目标正是“使人类更健康、更安全、更便利、更强大”。
红磡湾的理大校园中,代表着工业的砖红色建筑群错落有致地分布其间,给了理大人务实的精神底色一个鲜明的象征。推开智能可穿戴系统研究院的大门,入眼便是一个个造型简约的白色人体模型,仿佛即将走入服装设计院。可与一般服装设计院不同的是,这里的模特试穿的服饰,更准确来说是集电子、信息、柔性机器、人工智能于一体的高科技产品。譬如,可洗电子纱线及织物电子系统,包括全彩织物显示器、织物多频道听筒和扬声器、多轴应变传感织物、织物键盘和电路板等;可穿戴式呼吸监测系统;改善帕金森患者活动能力的智能穿戴系统;快速运动疲劳恢复系统;神经形态视觉传感器;高精度快速体液检测系统;车辆碰撞中人体实时压力分布检测系统;癌症病人治疗效果监测分析系统;可穿戴供电装置……这些产品具有共同的特点:一是实时进行多种感知和执行的功能;二是高智力;三是可持续能量供应和自我修复;四是超自然的沟通能力;五是适合可穿戴的各项要求。
智能系统由传感器、驱动器、控制和通信模块、电路板和电源等组成。持续可靠的电力供应是目前可穿戴系统发展的瓶颈问题之一。“现在市面上的可穿戴产品往往采用充电模式。这种模式对年轻人来说没什么,但对小孩、老人和病人却存在可靠性不强的问题。从2015年起,我们团队便致力于相关能量转换问题,历时多年,对多种能量转化原理及器件做了研究探索。”
其中,可穿戴能量收集器——离子凝胶湿气发电机,便是陶肖明在转化器领域新近的一项突破性成果。相关报道指出,湿气发电机对于实现“碳中和”目标及促进社会绿色能源的可持续发展,寻找和开发简单高效的绿色能源转换技术具有重大意义,也可满足与日俱增的电能需求。相比其他驱动方式,它利用大气环境湿气中的能量直接产生电能,不会衍生污染物及排放有害气体。然而,目前大多数的湿气发电机输出间歇性的电信号和低电流阻碍了无处不在的水汽自发发电进展和实际应用。所以,在实现大规模集成和应用上仍处于研究的瓶颈期。
为打破局限,陶肖明团队开发了一种高效、灵活及全天候适用的离子凝胶湿气发电机。它能高效收集空气中的水汽并直接转换成电能,表现出色并且适用于广泛的气候环境(相对湿度10%到85%和温度-24到60摄氏度的范围)。而香港全年湿度处于40%到90%中,湿气发电机为当地及相似地区提供了一个颇具前景的绿色能源。
离子凝胶作为发电材料,利用其吸湿能力和快速离子传输的特性,实现了高效的电流密度和能量产出。陶肖明团队开发的湿气发电机设备不仅可以稳定输出直流电压0.8V超过1000小时,还能产出高电流密度和突出的输出功率密度。更重要的是,它能大规模地集成获得210V的电能输出,并成功为许多微电子设备供电,包括计数机、能量表带、电子墨水屏、LED灯阵列。实践表明,这种凝胶型的湿气发电机制备工艺简单,价格便宜,可实现柔性集成,在物联网和自供电的可穿戴电子系统等领域具有普及的应用前景。陶肖明表示,产品采用的是3D打印的生产方式,还有很多改进空间。但可贵之处在于,这又是一次“从0到1”的创新突破,虽然要走较远的路,但在技术开发的同时,还能推进科学问题研究,在理论上有好的成果,实在令人振奋。
需求导向,产出浪漫织物与防护产品
作为长期专注智能纺织研究的科学家,陶肖明与其他研究智能可穿戴系统的学者相比,不仅将关注点放在挖掘更先进的智能材料上,也同样注重微电子芯片与纺织的一体化。她指出,实现一体化的纺织品电子功能会更全面、更稳定可控,还可以直接与互联网相连。如此,便绕过先进行材料研发,再做成织物,最后还要想方设法将织物与电子器件、数据处理采集器匹配等的复杂步骤了。“过去十多年,国外一些研究机构在这方面进行了研究,但成效不尽如人意。在这样的背景下,我们接过了这一重担。”
芯片尺寸微乎其微,厚度纤若发丝。为将微电子芯片放入织物中,陶肖明团队通过改造现有微电子封装和纺织工业装备,优化电子纺织一条龙工艺路线、参数和材料,最终研发出一种电子纱线。电子纱线的直径小于1毫米,弯曲刚度是传统的铜线一维电路的二十到三十分之一。这意味着,在此基础上做成的芯片织物,摸起来很柔软,仿佛不是一件刚性的电子器件。并且,它还可以水洗、用开水煮、泡在海水里、放在冰里,多次弯折,性能均十分稳定。后来,在织物电子系统研发中,他们采用LED芯片,做成了电子纱线及全彩织物显示器。农历兔年来临时,陶肖明团队制成了显示兔子动画的全彩织物,白色情人节前夕又推出显示爱心动画的全彩织物,科技与艺术文化碰撞出了别样的浪漫。
好奇心和社会需求,创新突破的原动力
2014年,国内一家公司研发出一种经发酵生产的高分子材料,邀请中国科学院及理大的多名专家合作研究,探索是否有做成纤维和纺织品的可能。“第一批纤维样品寄来时,纺织性能上有很多不足,但有趣的是,我们发现它竟然具有优良的广谱抗菌性能。但是第二批样品寄来后,这种抗菌性又消失了。”在好奇心的指引下,陶肖明领导团队对两批样品进行了提取、萃取和化学分析研究,第一次发现了有效成分是生物基可降解聚羟基丁酸酯(PHBO)低聚物。“我们在实验室合成了同类试样,确定其抗菌效果、机理及最小抑菌浓度。”
在此基础上,陶肖明与合作者通过流变改性、反应性共混和熔融纺丝的制备方法,工业化生产了后来被命名为“禾素纤维”的抗菌纤维,建立了质量控制的方法和实验室,实现了抗菌效果稳定可靠的纤维生产。禾素纤维可实现天然、无添加、绿色环保抗菌。它可以破坏有害菌的细胞壁,抑制、灭杀细菌,颠覆了长久以来依靠添加抗菌剂来达到优异抗菌效果的传统方式。以禾素纤维为基材,陶肖明与相关企业合作,研发出纺织服装、家纺用品、母婴用品、化妆品、卫生用品等一系列抗菌新产品,多元领域跨界融合,全方位守护人们的健康。
2020年年初,陶肖明团队在实验中进一步发现,生物基可降解聚羟基丁酸酯不仅具有超强的抗菌性能,还具有优秀的消杀病毒性能,对新冠病毒和多种流感病毒的抗病毒活性率均为20分钟达99.99%。“大家很快就坚定了想法,一定要克服疫情的困难,利用这个抗病毒性能做一些对抗疫有利的事情。”在彼时新冠感染的特殊时期,这项新发现意义重大。据此生产的禾素75%酒精湿巾、禾素抗菌口罩、禾素抗菌防护服等抗疫产品,在满足国内需求时,还积极对接国外需求,为全球共同抗击疫情作出了贡献。
在此基础上,陶肖明团队通过更进一步的制备和表征研究,发现了与生物基可降解聚羟基丁酸酯同族的聚羟基链烷酸酯型低聚物及其衍生物也有优异的广谱抗菌抗病毒的功能,同时具有低生物毒性、无过敏、无污染(降解产物为水和二氧化碳)和低碳排放等比其他抗菌抗病毒材料优异的性能。这一系列的研发成果开创了新型绿色抗菌抗病毒材料工业生产和应用的时代。现在两家科技公司应用这个科研成果,批量生产销售合成的聚羟基链烷酸酯型低聚物抗菌抗病毒材料,正向纤维、纺织、服装、涂料工业的广泛应用进军。
怀揣使命,科研育人迭代产业
这些成就的取得,跟陶肖明几十年如一日地奋战在教研一线,每周工作六天半到七天的苦功分不开。2022年,陶肖明的研究生导师不幸去世。谈起这位将近90岁的纺织物理学泰斗,她感慨万千。“他给学生授课时,在讲台上摔了一跤,3天以后便与世长辞。导师对我影响至深,他那种生命不息、奋斗不止的精神,一直令我钦佩。”作为老师,希望学科能一代代传承创新,培养优秀人才、促进行业发展、挑战学术难题,导师如此,陶肖明亦是。而她深知,这不是一代两代人、三年五年之功便能做成。
“学校是培养人的地方,需要培养工程师、高科技人才,也需要培养公务人员、创业者。我的理念是让人才在自己的领域做到极致,有健康快乐的人生,并不提倡千军万马全去挤独木桥,那样的人生太单调、太难、太苦了。”开明的育人理念之下,陶肖明的学生遍布各行各业,建立起工业界、学术界、政界乃至艺术界的沟通桥梁,促进智能纺织的进一步发展。“而从另一个角度来说,一个领域要发展好,必须有一流的人才,才能持续做。回头看看,虽说谈论产业化、产值是必要的,毕竟在工业水平低的情况下,大学能够帮助企业有所增益,不失为一件好事。”但从根本上来论,陶肖明认为,大学的使命是培养未来的人才,所以她十分注重培养学生从零开始的勇气和毅力,充分给予他们创新的机会和平台。
未来,依托智能纺织可穿戴系统研究院,陶肖明将着力在运动健康、元宇宙、人工智能方面进行可穿戴系统研究。“从整体需求出发,在现有技术、材料、科学的基础上推进新的领域。”长期处于一线工作,陶肖明对以纺织为基础的电子器件的发展和技术的细节非常清楚。将近30年的时间中,她怀揣使命,带领团队每隔5年进行一次综述性的总结研究。过程中,不光聚焦团队的项目,也会思考如何推动相关学术界、工业界的发展,培养跨学科交流的人才。
当被问及打算什么时候停下来,陶肖明笑呵呵地表示:“目前为止,我仍然觉得自己精力很旺盛,想法很多。跟年轻时相比,我对项目的判断力、对趋势的敏锐度更强。在学校、工业界、政府方面,我依然有源源不断的支持,所以为什么不继续做下去呢?倘若有一天真的江郎才尽,我又干嘛占着位置不让贤?”这位睿智优雅的智能纺织大家,对事业有着超乎寻常的信心和热情,也有着令人敬佩的坦率和真诚。几十年前,绫罗绸缎、纺染织秀;如今,复合材料、电子芯片。这前后看似完全不搭的事物,在她的人生里奇妙相遇,她一手牵引着细细的纺织纤维,一手操纵着刚性的电子器件,仿佛将古今交互、柔刚并济。而今,在港岛僻静的一隅,这样妙趣横生的碰撞依然在持续上演,且代代相承。
专家简介
陶肖明,香港理工大学纺织科技讲座教授、智能可穿戴系统研究院院长。1982年于中国华东纺织工学院(现东华大学)获纺织工程学士学位。经教育部选派留学,1987年在澳大利亚新南威尔士大学获纺织物理博士学位。主要研究智能纺织材料及其光电子器件和系统、先进纺织制造技术。发表900多篇学术论文和7部学术专著。获得47项发明专利,其中十余项被多国厂家以特许授权方式采用。获得中国工程院光华工程科技奖、美国纤维学会奠基者奖和国际纺织学会荣誉会士奖。曾担任国际纺织学会世界会长。

低扭矩纺纱技术优势突出
——访低扭矩纺纱发明者、香港理工大学教授陶肖明
记者:您是如何想到开发低扭矩纺纱技术的?
陶肖明:我国是纱线生产加工大国,研制具有自主知识产权的先进纺纱技术和设备,是提升我国纱线制造业国际竞争力的关键。虽然近年来出现了新型纺纱方法,如转杯纺、喷气纺、涡流纺和摩擦纺,在提高效率、缩短工序等方面具有优势,但在原料适用性和纱线总体质量上仍无法取代环锭纺。因此,环锭纺的技术改良和创新具有重要意义和应用价值。
环锭纺的新型纺纱技术主要包括紧密纺和赛络纺,两者都是通过控制纺纱三角区纤维的排列或转移来提高单纱性能。紧密纺缩小了纺纱三角区,从而减少了毛羽,提高了强力。赛络纺则增大纺纱三角区的纤维分束和转移来提高单纱耐磨性,达到单纱织造目的。但这些方法都未能降低单纱残余扭矩,没有解决由此造成的织物性能降低的问题,例如针织物歪斜变形等。
因此,提出低扭矩环锭单纱结构的设想,以期在一台环锭细纱机上、一道工艺步骤内,用低成本和环保方法生产出低扭矩单纱。
记者:这项技术的关键是什么?
陶肖明:这项技术是通过在环锭细纱机上加装假捻器装置实现的。假捻器的功能是产生假捻,影响纺纱三角区的纤维张力分布,从而改变纤维在单纱中的形态和排列分布,使纱线中的纤维产生残余扭矩相互平衡,实现单纱低捻、低扭、高强。
记者:低扭矩纺纱有哪些优势?
陶肖明:由于单纱扭矩小、强力高,这项技术可以使传统棉纱进入难以进入的高档针织领域,做出的棉针织毛衫歪扭小,单纱毛羽少,且具有独特的羊绒般手感,而且生产过程具有显著的节电节能优势。
记者:技术推广的前景和效益如何?
陶肖明:这项技术的推广和应用将显著降低生产成本,大大提高产品档次和附加值,满足企业对新技术和新产品的需求,提高企业竞争力。如果按照全国10%的应用率计算,每年可使棉纱增值53亿元以上,仅纺纱就可以节电6.4亿度。
记者:以何种方式在行业内推广呢?
陶肖明:我们将采取以授权形式向业内进行推广。具体是采用一次性付款并每年缴付保养费的方式授权10年,费用以使用方拥有的纱锭数量计算,每年保养费为授权协议内一次性付款金额的10%。
