为核辐射正名
——记中国科学院地球环境研究所侯小琳研究员

20世纪以来,随着能源日益贫乏,人类在加快核能开发的同时,随之而来的辐射危害也已受到社会的广泛关注。
核辐射是一种从原子核中释放出的辐射,少量的核辐射对人体并没有危害,但过量的核辐射却会使人致病、致死。侯小琳是国家“*人计划”入选者,长期从事环境放射性研究,他的愿望是:让人们正确认识核辐射,消除不必要的恐慌,并通过在环境放射性领域的深入研究,加快我国核技术发展步伐,使之早日与我国的大国地位相符。
执着坚持,厚积薄发
生于1966年的侯小琳,同很多人从事着自己未曾料想到的工作一样,与核事业结缘也并非出于早前规划,用他自己的话来说,“这在很多时候是一种偶然因素”。但必然就于偶然之中产生。1984年,侯小琳考入西北大学,学习物理化学专业,4年学成毕业后又考上中国原子能科学研究院读研究生,选择了核化学化工,从此迈入核研究的大门。后来继续读博士,他沿着这一条路踏进中国科学院高能物理研究所进一步从事核分析技术的研究。
一路走来,侯小琳在核技术领域的研究越来越深入,取得了不俗的成绩。更重要的是,神秘莫测的核世界令他感受到了无穷的科研乐趣,就像一点光亮出现在了夜色朦胧的海上,他找到了值得终身追逐的对象。
1998年博士毕业后,侯小琳选择出国求学,去丹麦做博士后。回忆当初的选择,他说:“我们领域的那一代人在当时应该是有这样的一个共识的,就是我们国家核事业在60年代发展起来并达到高峰,但是到80年代改革开放以后跌入了低谷,国家基本没有投入,只是低水平的维持现状。当时我所在的原子能研究院虽是国内第一个核能技术基础研究院,但是国家拨款不足,很多研究人员无奈之下去做食品防腐剂和糖精之类的实用技术,人才流失非常严重。”放弃自己钟爱的事业,对于侯小琳来说是痛苦的,可如果出国能让自己喜欢的事业得以延续,为什么不去试一试?事实证明,丹麦的确是个不错的选择。
在丹麦,侯小琳有幸进入里瑟国家实验室,师从实验室主任,也是名望甚高的国际放射性生态联合会主席Asker Aarkrog。在他的指导下,侯小琳在该领域内做出了许多开创性工作。他所在的小组虽然人才众多,但是放射分析化学方面的力量比较薄弱,在这样的情况下,侯小琳凭借自身过硬的放射化学专业背景备受重视,加上实验室资金充足、科研环境宽松自由、时间充裕、设备先进,他很快将小组多年想做而未能做的工作开展起来了。光阴似箭,在丹麦里瑟国家实验室,侯小琳这一待就是十多年,这些年可以说是他的科研黄金时期。年富力强、家庭幸福美满、他一头扎进自己的研究领域,大量采集数据,反复试验验证、广泛与国际同行切磋交流,经过长期不懈的坚持,终于积微成著,形成了一套独特的环境放射性分析和示踪研究方法,取得了国际同行的认可,也成为这一研究领域里最杰出的科学家之一。里瑟国家实验室和丹麦技术大学于2007年合并后,侯小琳被聘为该校核技术中心终身教授,成为该校第一位华人教授,也是丹麦唯一的放射化学教授,身兼科研和教学双重重任。
潜心科研,纵享成果
人类核活动释放的长寿命放射性核素碘-129(129I),是放射性废物长期危害的主要凶手之一。对129I,侯小琳曾做过大量的、深入细致的研究。
侯小琳说,129I是一种非常特殊的核素。一方面,碘在人体主要富集在甲状腺内,是人体必需的微量元素,而碘的放射性同位素在各种核活动中备受关注。比如核事故释放短寿命碘同位素碘-131(131I)是最重要的放射性核素,当131I被吸入人体时,它不会像其它放射性核素一样分散在人体各个器官,而是绝大部分进入甲状腺,从而大大增加了甲状腺癌的发病几率。另外,碘的化学性质非常活泼,它存在于水体、土壤、植物、大气之中。在大气中,它能够以颗粒物形式和气体形式同时存在;在水体里,它的溶解度很高,可以随着洋流循环;而且它又是一种氧化还原非常敏感的元素,它的不同化学形态可以反映它所处环境的状况。
基于碘的这些特性,侯小琳带领团队用129I作为示踪剂,进行了海洋环流、海水交换和大气循环示踪研究。他们通过对129I化学形态的分析,来研究碘在水-大气-土壤-植物中的转移、交换及其地球化学循环;还通过对环境样品中超微量129I的分析,来进行核活动诊断、核安全检测等。
这些研究成果散见于侯小琳所主持的众多项目和大量研究论文中,如中国科学院知识创新工程重要方向性项目“运用放射性核素129I对我国环境的示踪研究”,瑞典科学研究基金会、瑞典-美国2010/2011南极科学考察研究项目“海洋环流的129I超灵敏示踪研究”,中国科学院知识创新工程重要方向性项目(项目百人计划)“超低水平129I的加速器质谱分析及其在生态和地质研究中的应用”,北欧北极研究计划项目“129I的化学形态中子活化分析及其地球化学循环研究”中等。
对环境、废物和生物样品中的各种放射性核素,侯小琳及其研究小组开发出了一系列的分析方法,这些方法现在已经被很多实验室采用,并得到了国际上的一致认可。后来,侯小琳在此基础上跟芬兰赫尔辛基大学学者合作出版了《放射性核素分析化学》。这本书打破以往注重理论阐述的特点,对实际分析流程重点论述,其中包括各种环境样品中放射性核素分析,同时他还在书中将自己开发的一些分析方法与国际上通用的方法进行比较,做出了很好的推荐。
除此之外,侯小琳的研究领域还包括核设施退役废物表征研究和应用、核燃料循环研究、放射性示踪研究蛋白质在生物材料表面吸附机理等,已在科技期刊发表研究论文180多篇,其中SCI论文140多篇。凭借深厚的专业积累,他出任国际原子能机构特聘专家、国际核化学学会常务理事、欧洲化学与分子科学联合会放射化学学会理事、中国核化学与放射化学学会理事,组织和参与组织国际学术会议6次,并且多次受邀在国际学术会议作特邀报告和大会主题报告。
回国报效,责任在肩
在丹麦做科研的那段日子,一切都十分顺遂,妻子在国际著名的Intel公司丹麦分公司工作,孩子很喜欢丹麦宽松的学习氛围,自己也已经成为实验室的核心骨干。但对于一个身在异乡的中国人,他也和众多海外学人一样,孤舟一系故园心,梦想着学成回国,报效祖国。那些年,侯小琳一直关注着中国核事业的发展状况,也计划着回国的事宜,但无奈由于各种原因,计划久久无法提上日程,直到经历了两件事,才加快了侯小琳的回国进程。
2009年,《美国科学人》杂志上发表了一篇文章,文中引述某日本人对中国西北核试验情况的“研究成果”,炒作我国核试验危害少数民族人民健康,造成数十万人死亡,文章貌似有理有据,但实则谬误百出,经不起推敲。之后大量欧洲媒体还纷纷跟进报道,甚至有媒体找到侯小琳这位放射化学方面的专家,想要进行采访。侯小琳早已十分愤慨,有意趁此机会进行反驳,但是在查询相关资料时,他却发现国内相应研究数据不够完善,资料不够详实,几乎找不到有说服力的证据。遗憾之余,便也只能作罢。
2011年日本福岛核电站发生事故,在全世界范围内产生了重大影响,一时之间在我国民众中也引起了恐慌,甚至造成人们大量抢购碘盐。面对这一状况,侯小琳啼笑皆非,然而让他更加感慨的是,国家科研宣传做得不够、人们对核辐射缺乏基本的正确认识。想到国内环境放射性、放射性生态的研究相对欧美落后太多,同为科学家、也是中国人的侯小琳深深堪忧,责任感爬上心头……
如今,侯小琳已身在国内,任职于中国科学院地球环境研究所,工作进展非常顺利。他潜心于科技部科技基础性工作专项项目,主导我国环境放射性水平精细图谱建设。他说:“现在前期的基础性工作已做了不少,待做的事情更多,我们要逐步建成一个系统的环境放射性研究实验室,在国内让人知道中国科学院地球环境研究所有一个团队在做这件事情,以后随着工作的进一步深入,要让世界知道,中国有个研究中心正在做很好的工作。”
人们常问他“做这么多事情,你的时间从那里来?”侯小琳总是笑着说“古人说过:昼短惜夜长,何不秉烛游,能把自己多年积累的专业知识和经验用于国家的核事业,才算真正找到了用武之地,忙中有乐,其乐无穷!”
